Which one will suit your needs and personality best? A quick comparison will tell the tale.

The Blackberry Basics

First impressions are often the most important, and at a glance, these two Blackberries are quite similar. Both the Blackberry Pearl and the Blackberry 8800 feature the distinctive RIM Blackberry candy-bar design, with smooth, rounded edges and chrome accents. The Blackberry Pearl is slightly narrower than the 8800, although the Blackberry 8800 has a slightly slimmer profile. Both smartphones are outfitted with a keyboard, although the 8800's is a full-sized QWERTY keyboard, compared to the Pearl's truncated (but fully functional) SureType keyboard. Both feature a 240 x 260 pixel, 65,000 color display and the new Blackberry trackball navigation (as compared to the jog dial of older Blackberry models).

The Blackberry Pearl: Superior Messaging, Superior Style

Both the Blackberry 8800 and the Blackberry Pearl feature mobile web browsing, with full HTML and one-touch access, as well as multimedia messaging (with an optional add-on plan). Text / SMS messaging and email are also fully supported on both Blackberries. The Blackberry 8800 features RIM's trademark "push" real-time email, and has the ability to integrate with up to ten POP, IMAP, or SMTP accounts. As far as instant messaging is concerned, the Blackberry 8800 comes with Blackberry Messenger, whereas the Pearl adds Yahoo! Messenger and Google Talk pre-loaded with the smartphone. If you're a heavy user of Google Talk or Yahoo! Messenger, this gives the Blackberry Pearl a definite edge. The Blackberry Pearl also wins on style points, as it comes in several distinctive colors, including black, white, and a vibrant red.

The GPS Advantage: Blackberry 8800

In terms of office capabilities, both the Blackberry Pearl and the Blackberry 8800 can open Word and Excel documents, PDFs, and PowerPoint presentations that are attached to emails. Both cell phones come with full Bluetooth hands-free support and are data-capable, meaning either cell phone can be used as a wireless modem.

Now that we've firmly established that these two Blackberries have plenty in common, let's talk about where they part ways. The Blackberry Pearl's most immediate advantage over the 8800 would have to be the built-in digital camera. The Pearl's built-in camera phone is 1.3 megapixels, with a 1280 x 1040 maximum resolution, built-in flash, and 5x digital zoom.

However, the Pearl lacks a built-in GPS solution, which is where the Blackberry 8800 really shines. While the Blackberry Pearl can be made GPS-capable with a separate TeleNav GPS receiver, the Blackberry 8800 comes with integrated GPS built into the smartphone. The 8800 requires no extra equipment -- only access to a location-based service like TeleNav GPS Navigator. The Blackberry 8800 also features color maps and text or voice-guided driving directions right on the cell phone, making it invaluable for travelers. (The service does cost extra, $9.99 a month or $5.99 for 10 trips.)

If you're planning on using your Blackberry to listen to music, you'll find either model will suit your needs. The Blackberry 8800 and the Blackberry Pearl both play music and video files, supporting MPEG4, H.263 video formats and MP3 and AAC (iTunes Music Store) formats. Note that while the 8800 will play video files, it can't actually capture any; if you want to watch video on your Blackberry, you can use a MicroSD memory card or USB 2.0 to transfer files to it.

The Smart(phone) Choice

Plainly, both Blackberries have plenty to offer the business or casual user. The Blackberry Pearl's inclusion of a digital camera does aim it slightly more towards everyday use, while the Blackberry 8800's GPS capabilities make it the perfect choice for someone who's on the road a great deal. The Blackberry 8800 is also ideal if your workplace prohibits the use of camera phones. With the rich features available on both models, however, both are excellent choices.

Daniel Swensen

Also, check another articles about The Blackberry Storm Verses the Apple iPhone

BlackBerry Programming 101-How to Get Started With BlackBerry Software Development By Eric Giguere

With the recent launch of the hot-selling BlackBerry Pearl, RIM (Research In Motion) has gained a toehold into the extremely competitive consumer smartphone market. If you've been ignoring the BlackBerry platform because it was too Enterprise-focused for your applications, it might be time to specifically target the BlackBerry. Here's how you get started.

It's Java Time

BlackBerry development for all recent models is done exclusively in Java. So if you're not a strong Java programmer, now's the time to brush up on your Java programming skills. (C# programmers will find the transition to Java fairly simple, the languages are very close in most respects.) Don't learn about the newest Java features, however, because the BlackBerry platform is built on top of Java Micro Edition (Java ME), which is itself a derivative of Java version 1.3. So forget all the fancy (but useful) language features introduced in Java 1.5 -- generics, enumerations, and so on -- you can't use these in BlackBerry programming. You can't also use most of the library classes you're familiar with -- they're just not there. A small subset of the Java Standard Edition (Java SE) classes are supported, as well as a number of BlackBerry-specific classes.

Java Micro Edition?

Once you've brushed up on your Java, you need to spend a bit of time understanding the Java ME platform, which was formerly known as Java 2 Micro Edition, or J2ME for short. You need to understand the concepts of configurations and profiles, and in particular the CLDC and MIDP standards. Refer to this article and the ones that follow for detailed explanations.

Another great source of reference material is the Sun Microsystems
href="http://developers.sun.com/techtopics/mobility/">Mobility Development Center, which includes numerous articles and technical tips on general Java ME programming topics.

The BlackBerry Platform

After learning about Java ME, it's time to explore the BlackBerry platform. The BlackBerry platform is based on the CLDC and includes support for MIDP 2.0. However, a large number of BlackBerry-specific classes are also provided. Which brings you to the first question you'll face: are you going to write a BlackBerry application or a MIDP application? In a MIDP application you're constrained to only use the APIs exposed by the CLDC and MIDP standards. Your application will run on the BlackBerry and on most cellphones, but it won't be able to use any of the BlackBerry's special features. You can use any MIDP-compatible development tool, such as the Sun Java Wireless Toolkit for CLDC (formerly known as the J2ME Wireless Toolkit), to create your applications.

Most application developers opt to build BlackBerry-specific applications. This means learning the BlackBerry-specific APIs -- including new user interface classes -- and using the BlackBerry Java Development Environment (JDE) to develop your applications. The JDE, which is free to download, works with the standard Java Software Development Kit and provides you with all the tools necessary to create, package, test and debug BlackBerry applications. You don't even need a BlackBerry handheld, because the JDE includes a full-featured BlackBerry device simulator. A complete set of JavaDocs is provided that describes all the classes and interfaces available to programmers.

After downloading and installing the JDE, you'll want to read the developer's guides that come with the JDE and look at the sample applications that are shipped with it. Then start your development by writing a few simple applications to get a feel for the BlackBerry APIs and the tools.

Get A BlackBerry Handheld

Although you can develop and test your applications for free, at some point you'll need to run the application on an actual BlackBerry handheld. This will cost you money, of course, and so it's not something you'll want to do until you're serious about writing BlackBerry applications. On-device testing is crucial to ensuring that the application works correctly, because the simulator is not a perfect emulation system.

If you're truly serious about BlackBerry application development, consider also joining one of the BlackBerry developer programs for additional support and early access to new devices and APIs. You should also explore RIM's other BlackBerry developer resources. There are also third-party forums and books available to help you learn the BlackBerry platform.

Conclusion

BlackBerry programming is not hard if you know some Java and you understand the constraints and limitations of the underlying Java ME platform. (RIM), BlackBerry business phones and wireless handhelds are designed to boost work and enterprise on the move. Email access and web browsing capabilities have ensured the popularity of BlackBerry smartphones among business entrepreneurs.
The BlackBerry Pearl 8100 is the first in the series to integrate a digital camera, MP3 player, video player and an expandable memory slot and signals RIM's entry into the consumer market. Slightly larger than an I-pod nano, a thin and light (3.1 ounces) form factor and a very solid, high-quality feel - the BlackBerry Pearl is one of the lightest and smallest smartphones.

RIM has reduced the number to keys by approximately 50 percent to give the Pearl an all new look. The user interface gets an intuitive makeover with the integration of a trackball navigation and the trackball itself resembles a dazzling pearl! A large, ultra-bright, high-resolution LCD colour screen with light sensing technology displays vivid visuals.

The keypad is the SureType hybrid QWERTY with dedicated send, end, convenience, power and mute keys. This easy-to-use smartphone is equipped with call management features such as smart dialing, conference calling, speed dialing and call forwarding. Add to it features such as wireless push delivery of email and data, secure access to Internet and intranet-based applications, single mailbox integration, attachment viewing of popular file formats and you have an application powerhouse in your palms.

The quad-band BlackBerry Pearl also provides seamless connectivity through Bluetooth, wireless modem, EDGE and GPRS. What makes the Pearl standout from other handsets in the BlackBerry series is its multimedia kit. The 1.3 mega pixel digital camera, MP3 and video players on the Pearl might not be very impressive but nonetheless they serve to break the monotony and provide some much needed entertainment.

Alice Erin

Also, check another articles about The Blackberry Storm Verses the Apple iPhone

Blackberry Smartphone Users Save Time and Increase Productivity

Research In Motion (RIM), producers of the Blackberry smartphone, recently hired a research firm to conduct a study on the efficiency of using the mobile device in Europe, North America, Asia Pacific and Latin America. Certainly individuals could use it if they desired, but it was not intended for that purpose.

It is highly unlikely that many individuals were interested not only because the price was commercially based but also because it was heavier than the average cell phone, and people just didn't want to tote it with them. In spite of the inconvenience, personal users stayed with text messaging or mobile IM's rather than paying extra for a Blackberry.

Once other manufacturers began to make smartphones, we began to see newer and smaller Blackberry's such as the Pearl and the Curve. These were designed more for the personal user and were RIM's attempts to capture the individual market. With the introduction of the Blackberry Bold, RIM is clearing to make more of a mark in the smartphone industry as they have added a number of features that have never been on any previous Blackberry such as a bigger display to allow the user to read longer emails easier and support for Microsoft Office that allows the user to view documents almost as they would appear on a desktop computer.

This involves using Docs on the Go, a mobile program that supports Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Making the move to a Blackberry Bold will make a big difference in the way you communicate with family, friends or co-workers. Instead of having to rely on text messaging, you can use email instead. If you choose text messaging, the QWERTY keyword that is standard on a Blackberry Bold will make for quicker and easier conversations.

The fact that RIM is adding so many features that have never been on previous Blackberry issues shows that it is coming into 3G technology and 21st century requirements. The Blackberry is no longer just for business use although personal users will likely prefer the smaller Pearl and Curve. Since the Blackberry Bold is not yet available everywhere, you may have to search a little harder to find a Blackberry Bold review based on actual usage.

It may be worth your while to wait and see it when it is released in your area so you can see all of the new features firsthand as well as discover what mobile phone deals may be in effect at the time. Keep in mind that if you already have a carrier, there may be different mobile phone deals with other carried. If the mobile phone deals are more important to you than the carrier, take some time to inquire, but if you are satisfied with what you current provider offers, it's simply a matter of waiting until you can take advantage of any mobile phone deals that are available through your current mobile phone provider.

With all of the new features RIM has put into the Blackberry Bold, there is little doubt this model is going to be the most popular of all the Blackberry models that have been sold so far. Get a free mobile phone like the Blackberry Bold. Need convincing, read the Blackberry Bold review for info on this great mobile phone.

Caroline Telford

Also, check another articles about RIM BlackBerry Curve Smartphone - A Change in Blackberry Looks

Blackberry Bold Review - Features and Overview

RIM has recently announced the introduction of a new smartphone called the Blackberry Bold. This new offering by RIM will include many new features that have never been offered in the past on any current Blackberry phones.

The Blackberry Bold is also the first Blackberry that has 3G HSDPA technology. The resolution on the screen will also be higher than on previous Blackberry models and the addition of support when working with Microsoft Office files will make working with the Blackberry Bold much easier than earlier models.

The Blackberry Gold has a screen size of around 480 x 320, large enough to allow users to use mobile video and read long emails much easier. Because of the larger display area, the Blackberry Bold is somewhat larger than other recent Blackberries. In spite of the increase in size, it is rather lightweight with an easy to operate keyboard.

This model is the first to include Blackberry 4.6, the newest version of the Blackberry operating system. The Blackberry Gold also includes a 624 MHz processor and is the first of RIM's phones to support HSDPA high speed networks, GPS and Wi-Fi. Up until now Blackberry has been behind the eight-ball in working with Microsoft Office files. Instead of old technology, new RIM smartphones including the Blackberry Bold will utilize the DataViz Documents to Go, a much more stable and premium version among the Mobile Office suites.

With Documents to Go you can view documents and presentations almost exactly as they would appear if you were viewing them on a desktop. This is a definite advantage for those who travel frequently and use their Blackberry to communicate with their office as well as clients. Keep in mind that in many cases you can only view Microsoft documents, you cannot change them.

Since the Blackberry Bold is new to the market you will need to search a little more for a Blackberry Bold review. That doesn't mean there are no reviews available but rather that it will take some time before you will find many reviews on this phone. As you look forward you will discover that once mobile phone deals start to become available for the Blackberry Bold, it will become more popular and Blackberry Bold reviews will become easier to locate.

Blackberry has always been the most well-known among the smartphones but with so many other manufacturers developing their own smartphones, it's essential for Blackberry to be able to stay competitive and include some features RIM has never included on the Blackberry but that other smartphones have been using since their releases.

With the competition so stiff for smartphones, RIM has to enter into the 21st century with its offerings and provide users with more features if they are to remain competitive. The number of "firsts" that are on the Blackberry Bold shows they are on their way to remaining the most popular smartphone on the market in both the individual as well as business sectors.

Caroline Telford

Also, check another articles about RIM BlackBerry Curve Smartphone - A Change in Blackberry Looks

The Blackberry Storm Verses the Apple iPhone

The Blackberry Storm, the new smartphone star of the Verizon Wireless world, has been compared to the Apple iPhone. In fact, many have decided that the Storm, created by Research in Motion, is the first true challenger to the iPhone.

But what exactly can the Blackberry Storm do, and is it truly worth the price?

Well, here are just a few of the things that make many choose the Blackberry Storm over Apple's iPhone.

• It's a Blackberry.
The name itself has become known as the standard in smartphones. More than that, however, the Storm features tried and true Blackberry features. If you've used a Blackberry before, you'll be able to simply pick up the Storm and go since the operating system is organized much like that on previous Blackberry models. There's no huge learning curve like there is with the iPhone.

• A touch screen.
The Blackberry Storm is RIM's first touch screen smartphone, and its operating system looks very similar to the iPhone's. To navigate through the various programs and applications, all you need to do is touch the correct icon with the stylus.

• The price.
It's no secret that the iPhone is expensive. But Verizon's Storm is much more affordable. If you have a contract with them already, you'll pay less than $200 for your Storm. If you're running your own business and want to upgrade, you get even more of a discount-it's only around $100. There are many other, less advanced cell phones that sell for more than that.

In addition to these three reasons, the Blackberry Storm has a number of other features that make it the phone of choice for many. They include the following:

• Music and video.
The Storm can play MPEG4s, WMVs, and a variety of audio files. Instead of carrying around your phone and your MP3 player, you'll only need to make room for one device in your purse or pocket. The Storm has plenty of storage space, too (1 GB), so you don't need to worry about running out of room.

• A long battery life.
You can take for up to five and a half hours with the Storm before it needs a recharge, and it has a 15 hour standby battery life.

• A camera.
Every phone seems to have an integrated camera nowadays, and the Storm is no exception. The Storm has a 3.2 megapixel camera that takes both still images and records video.

• A built-in GPS.
You won't get lost with your Storm. It has a built-in GPS device and access to Blackberry Maps, an application that can tell you exactly where you are and give you directions to where you want to be.

These reasons and features alone are enough to make the Blackberry Storm stand out in its field, but they're only the tip of the iceberg. If you're looking for a great smartphone without the price of the iPhone, you may find the Blackberry Storm is exactly what you want.

Michael is a technology author for EverythingBerry where he is responsible for covering news surrounding RIM's latest smartphones. More importantly, have they made a good job of it?

The new 34 is actually a part of the Pearl range of Blackberry phones and when you see a picture you will realise why, the handset offers the same characturistic slim but deep build of the other Pearl models especially when fully opened. The Blackberry Pearl Flip 34, otherwise known as the Blackberry Kickstart 34, is in short Blackberry's first flip phone that offers all the added advantages of being a Blackberry smartphone but with the benefits of being a clamshell.

This phone has caused quite a stir of late, with its reinvented design, RIM have pushed the boundaries that much further with what looks to be a very successful result. The Blackberry 34 Flip smartphone comes with the Blackberry OS v4.6.1 and has opted for a bigger 2.63 internal screen as well as an external LCD display. Although there's no GPS radio the Pearl 34 is still a Quad Band GSM device with GPRS support and EDGE technology plus WiFi connectivity.

The Blackberry Pearl 34 Flip mobile phone weighs a little over 100g and features a new and improved HTML web browser that is not only capable of viewing desktop website versions but mobile versions as well. As with the majority of Blackberry devices the Pearl 34 is just as capable as a messaging device as any other and with the presence of SureType just as easy. Supporting the likes of email and instant messaging with Yahoo! and Google Talk, the Blackberry 34 Pearl shines brightly under scrutiny.

Sporting a 2MP autofocus camera with video capture for want to be photographers, the Blackberry Flip has something for everyone and music lovers will be pleased with the inclusion of a full media player with multiple audio support and 3.5mm audio headset jack. A stereo headset is included in the package. This new clamshell device has initially been made available on O2 pay monthly contract deals in the UK, however the phone is set to enjoy further launches on competing network operators over the coming days, in conclusion the Blackberry 34 Flip offers the same great features as the latest Pearl edition phones but with the added benefits of the keypad being hidden beneath the flip whilst not in use.

Whether this draws a new client base for RIM remains to be seen but clamshell mobile phones do have their enthusiasts who swear by nothing else, should they be considering a business enabled phone with a pleasurable side for those dull moments then the Blackberry Pearl 34 ticks the boxes. The Blackberry 34 Flip and Blackberry Storm are two of many recently released phones in the UK, for more detailed information please refer to our online mobile phones shop.

Susan Hargreaves

Also, check another articles about BlackBerry Cell Phone Review

RIM BlackBerry Curve Smartphone - A Change in Blackberry Looks

Blackberry handset range has allured many mobile lovers. You dream about it? Blackberry phone did it. The BlackBerry is a wireless handheld device introduced in 1999 which supports push email, mobile telephone, text messaging, internet faxing, web browsing and other wireless information services.

Same size as a PDA, with a mini keyboard, BlackBerry device allows you to receive and reply to emails. How does it work? Connected to a cell phone network (Cingular BlackBerry, T-Mobile BlackBerry, Sprint BlackBerry, Nextel BlackBerry and Verizon BlackBerry), terminal BlackBerry regularly query the email server of the user.

When a new email arrives, the terminal signals it. The user can then read the message and reply. Innovation comes from the fact that synchronization of the emails with the messaging server is real time through the cell phone network it is connected and it supports both GSM, GPRS and UMTS. Of course, BlackBerry service is more specifically dedicated to companies.

The devices are very popular with some businesses, where they are primarily used to provide email delivery to roaming employees. To fully integrate the BlackBerry cell phone into a company, the installation of BlackBerry Enterprise Server is required. But the popular device BlackBerry that allows reading emails using cell phone network is forbidden in some companies.

Indeed, some security experts fear about communications being intercepted. However, Research In Motion (RIM), editor of BlackBerry, claims that all the traffic is encrypted from start to end by the Blackberry servers installed in companies. In fact it has the exact same security level as a traditional VPN if correctly configured. A Blackberry handheld allows users to fulfill their need of communication but also give them the feeling of control that a phone conversation doesn't offer. More and more professionals often work in mobility situation and need to permanently be connected to computing system of the company.

According to a recent study, one third of business users show signs of BlackBerry addiction almost similar to those of alcoholism. Some people even use the ironical term "crackberries" to name the phenomenon. Also, most users are supposed to get BlackBerry devices to enhance their productivity but their constant attachment to email make it hard for them to concentrate on other things when they are out of office.

The professional Blackberry is a "all in one" terminal, phone/PDA/messaging, which design is optimized to allow users to manage emails on the go and to access various applications. The original BlackBerry device had a monochrome display, but all current handsets have color displays. Most BlackBerry devices is equipped with a full QWERTY keyboard, The ease of keying in and sending not only emails, but also SMS, is particularly practical, even if they do not have a BlackBerry.

However, the BlackBerry has no memory extension, no 3G compatibility, no camera and not much style. What is more, multimedia functions still remain low compared to other Symbian or Windows mobile. That is until today with RIM unveiling its first and brand new multimedia phone dubbed the new BlackBerry Pearl.

But still BlackBerry devices depend on mobile phone service coverage and are not WIFI compatible unlike similar handheld devices that are on the market now. RIM BlackBerry is increasingly integrating instant messaging into their new devices and software. RIM offers its own proprietary BlackBerry Instant Messenger, but also offer a Yahoo Chat and Google Talk clients and probably an upcoming BlackBerry MSN Messenger client.

According to RIM, BlackBerry PDA is used by about 5.5 million users worldwide. Blackberry is used by almost 3 million users in America. Some sources say about 1 million government employees are regular users. Canada is another one of the key market of the company. While including the usual PDA applications such as address book, calendar, to-do lists, etc… you can always download more BlackBerry software like games, ringtones, themes, webclient and other applications.

Tsan Trinh
